Invest

In 2008 alone, the total worldwide expenditure on armaments and was $1.46 trillion. Whilst national defence is of genuine importance, the intensive stockpiling and trade of arms is not, to say nothing of hazing or the military use of children. Offsetting the worst effects of Climate Change cannot be done without considerable sums of capital and an immense human undertaking; both of which conflict and military predominance taps. And when war is profitable, you are guaranteed to see more of it. Changing the world truly is in the hands of the profiteers. Stop. Invest in something precious instead. Nice idea - have you seen the global war-ming video (in this comp.)?

    Hi Temujin

Just watched your video. It’s great! I’m glad someone else recognises the need to divert conflict resources into solving global problems. These have grown so huge now that, like you, I cannot see where else the effort and finance is going to come from, especially when struggling out of deep recession in the aftermath of a world-wide bank rescue.

I work with the youth team (FREdome-YEA) that submitted the “Stop global war-MING!” film. I don’t know if you’ve watched that. We suggest one way in which that investment can be used, because we also don’t see how we can wean our civilisation off carbon. Virtually everything we use – plastics, fabrics, fertilisers, food, etc – are made with carbon and transported with carbon. Reducing carbon usage to the required levels, apart from being near impossible, would also drag us into the deepest worldwide depression imaginable.

Luckily we have a large repository of our waste available to recover: (a) organic waste (food, crop, animal, green… continuously produced); (b) excess atmospheric carbon dioxide (40% higher than pre-industrial levels); (c) wasteland and desert (“75% of the world’s land” – Hart); (d) money and effort wasted on conflict ($1Trillion+ annually).

If we can invest in building a system that uses natural processes to recreate world resources continuously out of all this waste, the future of our children and grandchildren suddenly starts to look very different.

Congrats again on your film. Maybe we can work together on getting our combined part of the message across?

    All the very best, Greg
