500 years ago Christopher Columbus discovered the continent of America. In 1997 another momentous discovery was made by Charles Moore, a sailor on his way home from a race in the Pacific. He came across a giant patch of plastic waste that took him days to sail across now known as the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”. “Plastic Soup” is an attempt to move people to recycle plastics, before the world’s oceans are destroyed for good. the most moving short film I have ever seen, and a powerful way to put emphasis into a message that we all need to heed.

Great one gave it 4 stars…only thing is like alot of the other films its over 1 minute - does this mean it cant be entered? Sorry to bring this up here but its just I noticed a few like this and it seems almost unfair if you have sacrificed parts of your idea to get it under 1 minute then someone else is alowed another 20 seconds or so!

Hi there,
I’m the Director of ‘Plastic Soup’. Glad people seems to be enjoying the film - it’s is an issue close to my heart.
In response to Blix’s comment about the film’s length: I checked many of the film’s on this site and their lengths before taking time to make mine. As many of the films are over 1 minute in length I took the guidelines which say, “All films must be no longer than 60 seconds (excluding titles and credits) and no longer than 90 seconds in total” to offer some leeway. This is very usual for a film competition and I assume that this is OK. Surely if the film could not be entered into the competition it would not be up on the site in the first place?
Good luck with your film Blix. I had a look and it is great and I gave it a good rating!

One final point is that if you look at the film itself the actual length (without title graphics and end graphics) is just over a minute. We tried to be clever about how we did titles/ graphics cards for this reason!

Yes well good luck! I am not actually doing a film but I know 2 people that are! There have been a few rule breaches I have noticed - i.e. some people seem to be using stuff that is probably in breach of copy rights but thankfully not your film!

Poetically powerful imagery with a stark juxtaposition of fact:a film of beautiful desperation.

Short, concise film with an important message for us all.

This is the most professional entry I have watched of all the entries so far. The editing is fantastic and I love the Titles effects being washed away at the start of the piece. Powerful piece 5 Stars!!

Sadly environmental issues such as this are out of sight out of mind unless brought to our attention by the media or in short films such as this. Truly excellent. We are all to blame…

Lauras film won’t save the sea but it might make people WANT to save the sea, which is why I have put it on our website blog…http://blog.seatrust.org.uk/

As a sailor this is a subject close to my own heart. A stylish film, well portrayed and thought provoking in a simple and elegant manner. well done!
October 17th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Well done, also a subject close to my heart, I have sailed past this spot many a time and as i have sailed most of the world and make my business from the sea, we all need to and should like to give something back.
October 17th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
As a sailor also, this too, is important to me. A beautiful, simple and effective film - 4 stars. It provokes the individual, but how to get the message across to organisations that contribute so much more to this disaster is a major problem. Well done, spread more widely.

A real eye opener, what a tragedy for the oceans. Good luck.
October 18th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
From the title to the final message, this short film really lacks for nothing. Beautifully shot, a great choice of music and tightly edited, it pairs the recycling thesis down to a few well-crafted soundbites. The film also captures how hypnotic the sea can be. Should be shown on mainstream television - 5 stars!

Hi Lara here,
Wanted to include this link in our discussion. It’s for WRAP http://www.wrap.org.uk/ . This is an excellent resource for people who want to find out more about waste management and recycling.
Take care all and thanks thanks for your wondeful comments about the film. Lara

I wonder why somebody is not DOING something about this. We will be more than happy place a link on our web-site and see if we can help. http://www.seasave.net

great film… I suggest a follow up …. show HOW to properly recycle plastic and what happens to recycled plastic.
many people do not know the proper way to recycle plastic, and since it gets sorted usually by a waste management company, who knows if ‘we’ are disposing of our plastic waste properly???
thanks for this great film, I’d like to learn and do more!

A beautifully presented video which does not loose its message in camera tricks and confused messages. Subtle but moving film. Makes you think!
October 20th, 2009 at 8:38 am
this film really gets its point across without heavy preaching and distracting filming or dialogue.
