My Paper Boat

My Paper Boat is the story of a little boy, we keep meeting somewhere or rather everywhere in the heart of India. He lost his play space due to the drought. He is now confused on where to leave his paper boat. So he is looking around for various means to make it move. For him, the hot sun is the villain who took off his comforts, but we know the reality. He is still on his search for an option. The protagonist here represents the displaced population due to global warming. Submitted by Arun Bose, India

“Displaced population due to Global warming”… I am sorry i don’t get it..In which country/continent have people started displacing themselves due to Global warming..?

I appreciate your intention but it would have been better if you have come up with a/some suggestion/solution.

    And Dave(commented in above post),
Can you please explain this video in detail? I really doubt you were awake through out this video..as i know you fall asleep very easily whenever any video demands you to think.. I know you fell asleep watching my video…

My honest suggestion to Arun. You have amazing ability to convey strong ideas but why use it predict a disaster…Use it positively, suggest a change, suggest a possible solution.

Thousands of people can spot the problem but it is only few who dare to think about solutions. Be one among them..Hope you take my comment in a positive way..

    Thanks
    karthick

  9. Arun Bose Says:

    Dear all,

Thanks a lot for the comments on the video. It’s quite inspiring.

I must answer one query raised by Karthick here on DISPLACEMENT - I have done a documentary film on the tribe called Gonds of Orissa who suffered from drought for almost 100 years. It seems many of them have got displaced to the city Raipur, to a slum later called as ‘Raipur ka Narak’ (The hell of Raipur). Whether the repeated droughts are an effect of global warming is not yet properly studied, but definitely drought had affected people in many ways, displacing them from their own land. Here in this continent…in our country…we have a true situation to face.

I coudn’t upload the whole film in youtube. But I have shared a small trailer as well as wrote about it in my blog. http://www.centurs.blogspot.com

Anyways, thanks for you thoughts on the film.

    Warm regards,
    Arun

  10. Cathy Fitzgerald Says:

    Dear Arun

Congratulations on making the short-list - your film, particularly as it conveys its message without words and incorporates the people and lands who will be most affected in such an imaginative poetic way is really great and I think its a great strategy for the international audience who will not have to have the work translated. I think myself that slow, poetic means can be a rather subversive act in these days of so much images and noise. Hope to see your work in Copenhagen and will look at your blog too, best wishes Cathy

  11. Karthick Says:

Unfortunately, I will disagree with you. Droughts have been around several places through out the previous century. China has seen more more more severe droughts….even before we started industrializing..(even your example proves that!!!) which [industrializing]we cite as prime reason for climate change…

see, In the river banks of Kosi, Every year, like a ritual, People have to migrate because of heavy floods… I would say drought and floods can be handled if there is proper political will ( You know what i am talking about!!!!!!)

But Climate change is some thing more fundamental, more subtle. It does not manifest in terms of droughts and floods which are seasonal in nature…My humble suggestion, if you are unsure of the facts, don’t base your movie on it…as this movie makes a deep impact with the “not so sure” facts…I would say it is morally inappropriate…

Your movie is wonderful but it is like a cliche Tamil Statement which comes in a film “Building strong, Basement Weak…”

I do agree that there is climatic change [ eg: Glaciers around north pole have receded by 15 kms in past 10 years or so - Today's BBC ]but don’t panic people with unsure and “may be not true” facts…Your movie makes an impact and so i want to highlight it…Hope you are fine with my opinion…

    Sincerely
    Karthick

Thanks a lot Cathy :) Good to hear that u could relate to rythm of the video. Competition is not my plan. Glad that it is reaching some thinking minds.

    Warm regards,
    Arun

In a competition, there are always finalists and those who don’t get through. The problem we had was that there were so many fantastic videos to choose from that there was inevitably going to be great films that didn’t make it, especially as we had to meet a criteria for each category.

However, we’ve decided to rectify this a little and reward 5 more great videos. These have been added to the shortlist and will also guaranteed receive a subscription to Shooting People. They will be on our homepage soon.

    The five videos are:

Tank head, Nature finds a way, Paving the planet, Earth clock, Restore the earth

WHAT WAFFLE FROM THE JUDGES THESE FILMS SHOULD BE REMOVED!

    THIS COMPETITION HAS BEEN CORRUPTED!

  14. Andrea Says:

It’s in my top 10 so I do like it. But I can’t help but think it’s won because the it’s the type of thing the judges like (people who are already aware of green issues and Copenhagen). That’s the only area I think it fails in: convincing Joe Bloggs and the sceptics to take note. It doesn’t say much as well so people read into it kind of like a modern painting with one colour. I just cant imagine a chav watching it and changing his mind! But as I said it is a nice video, well done!

I wonder if cath is happy now! None of the five added later got a prize, strange that hmm! And congrats to all the final films were very very good!

  15. Cathy Fitzgerald Says:

    Dear Arun

Congratulations - so delighted to hear the news! So well deserved!!! So delighted for you and hope it also highlights your other important work too.

    Best wishes

    Cathy

On behalf of our little cast and crew, I would like to thank the contest organizers, the judges, the sponsors and the viewers for accepting this video. Glad that it could reach to this rank. Yet, more than winning this competition, we are quite happy being a part of this event - rather this movement- reaching lot many like minded people, propagating a good cause in the simplest manner possible. As many of you commented, this might not make huge changes but we are sure that it can definitely trigger a thought for all thinking minds.

    Thanks again.

@Arun: Lovely film - can’t say more than that.

@ Karthick: with reference to your statement -

“I would say drought and floods can be handled if there is proper political will ( You know what i am talking about!!!!!!)”

I am sorry but I don’t. Droughts and floods are forces of Nature - man, with all his technology and political will power cannot control or manipulate it according to his whim. It is true that they are seasonal and have been around since the beginning of time. How ever, it is not the actual phenomena that Arun’s film chooses to focus on but on its frequency and how it affects a village boy’s favourite past time - playing with his paper boat. One may ask, “Surely he can find some other form of entertainment?” Yes, he can. But this is what he loves to do and he misses it.

With regard to your comment - “But Climate change is some thing more fundamental, more subtle. It does not manifest in terms of droughts and floods which are seasonal in nature…” - please see this link http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8313672.stm which I too have sourced from the BBC website. You only need to read the first para to know global warming and climate change DOES have an impact on the frequency of floods and droughts. Perhaps we should target the BBC for being “morally inappropriate”?

Simple but a touching concept; will make sense to people from all parts of the world. The responsibility on the X & Y generation is huge in terms of creating awareness and bringing about the change. Save power! Save Water! Plant trees, Don’t waste food…all what our grand parents taught us :)

  23. julian Says:

your film is exploitative. it exploits a small child with big eyes (see any famine campaign….or toilet-paper commercial)…and even though your message is about a global concern, your use of small child with big eyes who can’t sail his paper boat anywhere is an obvious cliche and therefore an uninteresting creative choice to have made. it also tells us that there is drought in india. well there’s always drought in all kinds of places…and it’s often seasonal, so you’re not telling me anything i didn’t already know. there is one film on here that did tell me something i didn’t know…and that was about recycling our urine as fertiliser and how that would save money and reduce CO2 emissions.

  24. Londhen Says:

Hey Arun and team… congratulation to you all. No doubt, it is a fantastic short film. Those judges are not dumb to give your movie 1st prize. It truly deserve and you got it. Thats about it! There are lots of good short films, but it should click at the right time… and your film did click. There will be lots of critics around and if they don’t like the film…thats there problem and let it carry with them. You have done your part and looking forward to see more of your films!! Good luck and congrats once again.
