“When I Am 18″ is an animated short film featuring the drawings and voices of sisters Maja, 8, and Lily, 5, from the UK.
They make a desperate plea to governments ahead of the most important environmental conference in history - the COP15 summit in Copenhagen in December. Maja and Lily beg world leaders to take action to give legal protection to the world’s rainforests and the animals that inhabit them.
Otherwise, by the time the girls are old enough to vote, it will be too late for their generation to save the rain forests.

What an excellent film. The contrast between the innocence of the children’s voices and the seriousness of what is being said, makes this film both effective and poignant. The ‘cutting down rain-forest’ machine with ‘toilet paper’ written on the side was a brilliant image.

Dear Maja & Lily,
What a great video you’ve made! What I loved best was how clearly you explained your message so even those who don’t want to hear it, will.

Global warming, it’s a natural cycle, for millions of years, Im not convinced. Businesses and governments are using it as a political tool, a tax gathering exercise and a control mechanism, kids don’t understand that and the biased propaganda they are fed at school is disturbing. But it gets my vote because destroying rain forests is wrong anyway.

Simple and to the point. A lovely film which addresses the core issues of climate change in a manner appropriate to all. The children’s voices are a clever device to really make you think about the legacy we are leaving them with by our current actions.

Love this video, very simple but spot on.

This has a stark but very effective message. Maja, Lily and Adela have done well… a lot of work must have been involved to produce this film?

& remember FORESTS NEED PROTECTING NOW MORE THAN EVER
xxxxxxxxxxx

We really MUST protect the rainforests, and we must do even more. Today’s carbon sinks even as they are, are unable to absorb today’s levels of carbon emissions. Even if we were to stop all carbon emissions today, which we can’t, world temperatures would continue to rise for decades because of all the CO2 already in the air, taking us towards that dangerous tipping point of unstoppable climate change. We need to take this excess atmospheric carbon back out.
We therefore need to stop de-forestation, start re-forestation AND look realistically at where we will find the resources to replace those that we refrain from using.

I see the message and the video is very strong but all you are doing is saying what everyone already knows. It is a plan of action that has been tried so many times before!
I do however wish you good luck

Simple - if we don’t start thinking and doing something about the future of our children and grandchildren right now then there is no future! Well done, girls.

When the bee drops dead, I busted laughing out loud! And then the seriousness of the message hits you!
Brilliantly executed and perfect timing throughout… Well done Martin with the animation.
Go team Pickles!
There are some really ‘cute’ touches too (writings on the vehicles!) especially because drawn by the little sisters themselves.
Thumbs up from me!

Wonderful and superb..You are very creative and informative….
As you have spoken about Rain forests, I would like to highlight few issues, which i read about..
Actually, there are mechanisms actually implemented in the name of “Carbon credit trading” to promote cultivation of forests… But even there, our politicians are there to spell doom by means of corruption and fraud….
http://www.probeinternational.org/carbon-credit-watch/carbon-credit-scams-add-growing-list-alleged-fraud-cases
I would suggest, Socially conscious kids like you should be determined to become national leaders to help save this wonderful world…

Beautiful, effective, real, funny and sad. A tiny comment - can you slow down the soya machine so we can read it? Well done!

In a competition, there are always finalists and those who don’t get through. The problem we had was that there were so many fantastic videos to choose from that there was inevitably going to be great films that didn’t make it, especially as we had to meet a criteria for each category.
However, we’ve decided to rectify this a little and reward 5 more great videos. These have been added to the shortlist and will also guaranteed receive a subscription to Shooting People. They will be on our homepage soon.
The five videos are:
Tank head, Nature finds a way, Paving the planet, Earth clock, Restore the earth
WHAT WAFFLE FROM THE JUDGES THESE FILMS SHOULD BE REMOVED!
THIS COMPETITION HAS BEEN CORRUPTED!
