Get On Your Bike and Save The World!” This is the message from Wafalme, a group of young Kenyans who wowed judges to win the Artists Project Earth Youth Vision Award – part of the One Minute to Save the World international film competition for 2010. The youngsters, from impoverished shanty towns across Nairobi came together to highlight the planet’s environmental problems.

Their winning hip hop video “Me and My Bike” calls on Kenyans to preserve the natural environment by “going green and keeping it clean”.

15 year old singer, Mary Ndunge, says “Nairobi’s ghettos are badly polluted so it’s an honour to win the award and to be recognised for something so environmentally important”.

The Social Media Revolution Spawns a New Generation of Activists

Young film makers from around the world are taking on the world’s leaders in the run up to Conference of the Parties in Cancun, Mexico (COP16) through an online campaign called 1 minute to save the world. These young people hope to mobilise world opinion and galvanise leaders of the most polluting countries to take action.

By making 1 minute films on the devastating consequences and mitigation of climate change and then using social media to campaign to get their peers globally to view, vote and comment on their films, they represent a new generation of ‘digital activists’ using the internet to get their political messages and opinions seen and heard.

Show World Leaders How You See Climate Change

Amateur filmmakers from around the globe are encouraged to participate in the “1 minute to save the world” competition which closes in two months. The winning entry will be screened at COP16 in Mexico.

The international film competition is open to all ages and is free to enter; budding filmmakers must submit a short film (roughly one minute in length) about climate change. The films will be judged by professionals in the film and environmental industries, including Ben Kott of Google Europe Environmental Operations. The deadline for entries is December 17; entries from filmmakers under 18 in the Best Youth Film category must be submitted by November 12.

1mtstwlogo-6Make a 1minute film on climate change and you could win £5000, laptops, Flipcams and the SONYNEXVG10 HD camcorder. Winning films will be screened in front of world leaders at COP16 in Mexico and be part of an on-line campaign going out to millions of viewers, they will also go to International Film Festivals in 2011.

1 Minute To Save The World is an international competition, open to all ages and free to enter. Judges include film industry giant Shekhar Kaphur, Passion Pictures, Ben Kott (Google Europe Environmental Operations) and the UK Copenhagen 4 (youth climate change activists). Competition deadline is 17th December (12th November for under 18 age group).

In partnership with Unicef, Passion Pictures, United Nations Development Program, APE (Artist Project Earth) and Sony.

Mexico – President Felipe Calderón Calls for the COP-16 to be Turned into Pivotal Moment in Fight Against Climate Change

20100201-cop16Mexican President Felipe Calderón has called for the COP-16 to be hosted in Cancún to be turned into a pivotal moment in mankind’s fight against climate change.

Mr. Calderón said that the problems of the world economy need not detract attention from a problem that will not give the world a second chance: global warming. He stressed that the Conference of the Parties, to be held in Mexico at the end of this year, constitutes an opportunity to achieve significant progress.

He explained that during the informal consultations in the negotiation process in the run-up to Cancún have yielded tangible results.
